Dan Sullivan Attracts Attention for Apple Core Jr. Dan Sullivan earned some positive press this month in Hockey Magazine East. In an artice featuring the Empire Junior Hockey League's New York Applecore, writer Neil Becker had this to say about Sully, "Another key reason to why the Apple Core are cruising along with 34 points and the top spot in the Eastern Conference is the phenominal play of rookie goaltender Daniel Sullivan. He boasts an 11-3-1-1 record with a .935 save percentage and one shutout. "We picked up Sully before training camp and he has been the backbone of the team ever since, " said the coach, Chris Cosentino."

Brett Hatfield Impenetrable at Capitals Shootout! At the Verizon Center "Phone Booth" on December 20th, the Midget Finals of the Capitals Skill Competition that pitted the Reston Raiders against the Prince William Panthers took place between periods of the Capitals verus Canadiens game. Goalie Academy regular Brett Hatfield stopped everything to help his Raiders team win it! Each of the Reston Raiders Midget (17 and under age) participants scored on their second shots to claim victory 2-0 in 8 shots in the Washington Times Skills Challenge. The match began with the skating skills drill, however, Prince William’s Sam Glier had not been given a puck when the match started, so the start was unfair, and though Reston won the drill, the officials ruled that no point was to be earned. So, the event came down to the shootout, where each participant shot twice. Prince William’s Sam Glier took the first shot, with Reston’s goaltender, Brett Hatfield making a right toe save. Jaegar Carlyle, shooting for Reston matched the feat, with Prince William’s goaltender, Matthew Martin, also making a left toe save. The second shooters, Antonio Conde of Prince William and Andrew Lee of Reston then traded shots with Conde making a deke left, and Lee a deke right, but with neither scoring, as both goaltenders made pad saves. In the second round, both Carlyle and Lee scored for Reston, while neither of Prince William’s shooters could penetrate Hatfield, and Reston earned a 2-0 win in 8 shots. The match, held during the first intermission of the Montreal Canadians vs. Washington Capitals game on Thursday, December 20, 2007, was officiated by Southeastern Hockey Officials Association referees Matt Colehour and Michael Yates.
