"Working with Darren for the past twelve years has truly been a great experience. The transition from barely knowing the basics of goaltending to playing at the division one level would not have been possible without his knowledge and guidance. Darren's passion for the game is second to none, while his enthusiasm and upbeat attitude are very contagious and facilitate a positive learning environment. Training at his new synthetic ice facility has been a tremendous benefit to my game, pushing me to new limits both physically and mentally. I am privileged to have Darren as an instructor and highly recommend training with him to any goalie that is willing to put forth the effort in order to achieve vast improvement and success at the next level.”

Dan Sullivan, University of Maine

"Over the past few summers, I have skated twice a week with Darren Hersh at The Goalie Academy's synthetic ice training facility (Progressive Hockey Development) in Sterling, VA. The combination of training on the synthenic ice and the one-on-one attention helpsed me get ready for the season. I can not wait to come back this summer. It is the best place to train in the DC area for goalie training!

Mike Clemente, Brown University

“When he was 8 years old, my son, Jay Williams, decided he wanted to be a goalie.  Early on, we opted for private lessons with Darren Hersh.  He played AAA hockey for 5 years; prep school hockey for 2 years; made USA Hockey's National Camp 4 years in a row; represented the USA 2 years ago at the Five Nations Tournament in Germany and at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic last summer.  He is currently playing in the USHL for the Waterloo Blackhawks and has committed to Miami-Ohio, NCAA D-I on a full hockey scholarship. There is absolutely no doubt that regular private lessons with Darren has made a huge impact on his development as a goalie.”            –Rosie Oakley, Jay Williams’ Mother

"I have been working with Darren for about seven years, ever since he opened up his first synthetic ice facility. From the first lesson, I knew he was a great goalie coach. He has pushed me to my limit and he knows exactly what he is talking about. His attention to details has allowed me to play at the highest possible level. He has not only taught me how to stop a puck but has taught me the correct way to stop the puck. Lessons with Darren are also a lot of fun. I look forward to having lessons with Darren each and every time. He works the goalie hard but also has a lot of fun while doing it. If it wasn’t for Darren, I know I wouldn’t be at the level I am today." - Nick Ellis

“Even though I started going to Darren later than other kids, I don’t know where I would be without him.  Before I went to Darren, my technique was a mess and thankfully I started seeing him and he helped me right away. Darren taught me to be technically sound but also to be efficient with each save. I believe this helped me immensely because it allowed me to stay controlled in the net, which made saves seem routine. After a couple sessions, I realized that I knew that I had to see him more often so that I could keep improving. The next summer was when I made my biggest improvement. One great thing about working with Darren was that I was able to work with other goalies that are better and older and I could see their work ethic.  Over the past two summers, I was able to work with goalies like Michael Clemente and Dan Sullivan and that was as important to my development as Darren teaching me. Working on synthetic ice has helped me get stronger pushes and makes skating on ice seem a lot easier. I have enjoyed my years going to Darren as he makes his lesson hard work but fun, and I look forward to continue working with him over the years.” -Bruce Racine

“I can’t say enough good things about my son’s (Daniel Dolliver) Goalie Academy experience over the years.  What started out as a one time lesson in 2004, has turned into much more; camps, clinics, and many more private lessons.  My son now looks up to all the staff members as mentors.  The Goalie Academy has become a clubhouse for “puckheads” like him.  He’s not only learned to be a good goalie, but learned valuable life skills as a student.  He’s living his dream as a AAA goalie too.   I have looked to Darren, Kris and Troy for advice on everything from being a good goalie parent, finding the right equipment, best places for him to play and more. I know that his success is a result of Goalie Academy instruction.  If you’re looking for great hockey instruction and more….GO TO THE GOALIE ACADEMY.” – Mike Dolliver

"Two years ago we moved from Colorado to Virginia. We asked many hockey players, parents and coaches who to take our son, Kristofer, to for goalie instruction. Hands down everyone said Darren Hersh from The Goalie Academy. Kris has been working with Darren since then and we have noticed a tremendous improvement not only technically, but also mentally. He looks forward with great enthusiasm to his lessons and his week at Darren’s summer camp because of Darren’s great teaching ability, technical knowledge of goaltending, and most importantly because he makes the hard work fun. Darren motivates his goalies to play and an extremely high level. Kris’s confidence as a goalie has increased dramatically. Both Kris and I highly recommend Darren Hersh as a goalie instructor." -Kelly Carlson, Mother of Kristofer (13) Washington Little Capitals Bantam Minor AAA

“The Goalie Academy is simply the best.  My son has been working with The Goalie Academy for more than 7 years now, and they have been instrumental in his development as a goalie.  The instructors are extremely knowledgeable, are extremely attentive to each goalie’s developmental needs, and they tailor their instruction to help each goalie become the best goalie he or she can be.  They really care about making each goalie better.  The Goalie Academy instructors have an incredible ability to relate to their students, making difficult concepts easy to understand.  And in addition to providing superb instruction, Darren and his Goalie Academy staff have really served as mentors and role models to my son, helping him to continue to develop to his potential and providing invaluable guidance about his future development and progression.  I cannot recommend The Goalie Academy enough and would be happy to discuss it with anyone who is interested in learning more about it.” - Michael Lackey, Michael's father

"Literally, within the first week of working with Darren, the game became more simplistic and made more sense to me.  His extremely personal demeanor made it easy for me to communicate what I was looking for and in turn he developed a plan to help me achieve my goals." - Rich Sillery, Former Union College NCAA D-I Goalie
